Bratislava OpenCamp 2025

Open source as the core of web3
2025-04-05 , Aula Magna
Language: Slovak

Open source has always been a catalyst for rapid innovation, transparency, and community-driven development. In the realm of web3 - defined by decentralization, trustless protocols, and user sovereignty. Open source takes on an even more pivotal role. This session will explore how open source software and collaborative governance form the foundational building blocks of emerging blockchain networks, decentralized finance (DeFi), and token-based communities. Through real-world examples, we’ll uncover how open code fosters security, transparency, and scalability in web3, and how novel funding mechanisms (like DAOs) sustain these projects. Attendees will gain insights into contributing effectively to open source web3 ecosystems and shaping the future of the decentralized internet.

Web3 promises a new internet defined by decentralization, user-centric data ownership and trustless transactions. However, none of this is possible without the open source movement, which has laid the groundwork for permissionless innovation and transparency. This session will delve into how open source principles enable the core tenets of web3, from blockchain protocols to decentralized applications (dApps) and beyond.

We’ll start with a brief overview of web3 and its evolution from traditional web2 platforms, highlighting the differences in governance, data control and community engagement. From there, we’ll examine notable case studies of open source-driven success, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) and various DeFi protocols, software or hardware wallets. Attendees will see how these projects leverage open codebases and collective intelligence to drive faster iteration, enhance security, and create trustless systems that anyone can audit or build upon.

Additionally, we’ll discuss the emerging challenges that open source web3 projects must navigate: sustainable funding, regulatory uncertainty, user experience hurdles, and the need for inclusive governance models. Examples of decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) and token incentive mechanisms will be showcased to illustrate how communities can collectively support ongoing development and maintenance of critical open source infrastructure.

By the end of the talk, attendees will have a clear understanding of why open source is fundamental to the promises of web3, as well as practical guidance for how to get involved, whether they’re developers, entrepreneurs, or simply tech enthusiasts looking to shape the next era of the internet.
